Denpasar airport closed as volcano eruption intensifies

Denpasar'sNgurah Raiairport has closed with the eruption at Bali's Mount Agung volcano intensifying.

Airport operator Angkasa Pura says the airport will close from 27 November to the morning of 28 November.

It adds that all flights arriving and departing from the airport will be cancelled until further notice.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's national disaster agency has raised the emergency status to the highest level, in anticipation of "all possibilities and risk of disaster".

In a statement, it says that the eruption has continued and that thick ash has reached a height of between 2,000m and 3,400m from the peak of the volcano.

A bright glow on the summit also indicates that "a larger eruption is imminent", it adds.

FlightGlobal schedules data shows that Denpasar is largely connected to Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Indonesian carriersGaruda Indonesia,Lion Air,CitilinkandIndonesia AirAsiaaccount for more than half of all seats out of the airport.
